ISSA head warns on green issues

Ship suppliers must take a lead on the environment in providing services to their customers and need to be more vigilant when asked to dispose of shipboard waste, warns International Shipsuppliers & Services Association president Jens Olsen.

Launching a ‘Green ISSA’ campaign, he urged suppliers to be fully aware of complex international, national and regional legislation on the disposal of hazardous and noxious substances.

“Suppliers can get caught up in a legal nightmare if they are pressurised to dispose of what they believe is harmless shipboard waste,” said Mr Olsen.  “In some instances, waste can contain more than the suppliers bargained for.  By agreeing to handle it, they could face hefty fines.  By that time the ship will have gone.”

ISSA wants members to think ‘green’ on everything from packaging to carbon footprint, but stresses that garbage disposal causes most complications.  The association now plans to include the environment as part of its Quality Plus programme, which assures that existing and potential members meet high quality standards.
