Garrets hatches ethical egg plan
London-based marine contract catering company Garrets International is introducing a free-range egg policy for customer fleets to satisfy changing public attitudes and to pre-empt EU rules due in 2012.
The project is being overseen by Barry Samms, from the company’s purchasing department, who explains: "We supply more than 7.5 million eggs worldwide each year and we want all of them to be free range well ahead of EU changes regarding chicken farming.”
Garrets is introducing its policy in the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. Mr Samms adds: “Our clients are welcoming the opportunity to purchase more ethically-produced eggs at competitive prices, while seafarers can enjoy a high quality product in the knowledge that it helps to support best food production practices.”
The company will offer free-range eggs to customers throughout the world as soon as the right resources become more widely accessible. It also plans to extend the approach with other free range and organic products.
