What does the future hold for the
shipping industry?

Keynote Speakers

Back by popular demand this year is Professor Alan Waller OBE, Chairman of the Institute of Logistics and Transport and Vice-President for Supply Chain Innovation at the International Consultancy, Solving International.  Professor Waller will also be bringing his knowledge and expertise to Conference Session 1, Supply Chain Management, as a panel member.

Food for thought…The ‘Learning Cafés’

This years conference sessions will be based on a ‘Learning Café’ format – An opportunity for purchasing and supply professionals to hear from specialists in each topic and to put forward their opinions and views in an informal environment.  By bringing the experts to you, each learning café session will aim to provide delegates with practical advice and strategies to aid in the day to day working life of a busy purchasing professional.

Each Learning Café will consist of a panel of three leading figures within the industry and will begin with a short presentation on the relevant subject of interest for each session.  There will then be an opportunity for delegates to question the panel and raise any points or opinions they may have about the chosen subject.

DAY 1 – Wednesday 17th September 2008

Session 1 – Supply Chain Management
This session will explore useful and relevant information to assist in the overall management of your supply chains – Freight Forwarding, Warehousing, Transport and Logistics are all subjects that will be covered in this session.  This session will provide marine professionals with invaluable information so they can plan, implement and control the operations of their supply chains as efficiently as possible.

Session 2 - E-commerce – Back to the future
Purchasing strategies are changing, shifting and developing constantly. But where does e-commerce fit into the overall purchasing strategy these days? What about standards? What about delivering real value? Is it now a reality we can all trust? We know that the actual technology is operational and a part of our day to day business but what are the true challenges that the world of e-commerce faces?
This conference session will bring together the top names in marine e-commerce as well as IMPA’s own team to focus on and discuss the changing face of the industry, the process issues between buyer and supplier, and how to gain maximum value out of e-business by looking at HOW the two parties conduct business via this medium.

DAY 2 – Thursday 18th September 2008

Session 3 – ‘Buying the top five’ – a how to style session
Expert advice for purchasers in this ‘how to’ style conference session.  Lead by Rob Scharff, General Manager for purchasing and logistics at Stolt Tankers B.V, the topics covered in this session will be how to buy lube oils, machinery parts and provisions.  In addition, the session will also look at how to buy/outsource/subcontract/develop partnership co-operations for technical services.

Session 4 – Opening doors and increasing sales
This final conference session is ideal for both purchasers and suppliers alike. It will discuss how suppliers can add value to ensure a continued good working relationship with current business partners, and at the same time create an excellent base for attracting new customers. The session will also look at the psychology involved in the relationships between purchaser and supplier, exploring the various ways in which a positive and mutually beneficial relationship can be created and maintained.
