Knut was born in 1947 in Oslo and started his career at Wilh Wilhelmsen in 1967 as purchaser in the technical operations department. He finished his business education including Norwegian Purchasing Academy, before completing six months marine service in 1971. He was manager of the technical purchasing department at Wilh Wilhelmsen from 1980 to 1986 and then purchasing manager from 1986.

He now holds the position of Head of Procurement with Wilhelmsen Ship Management, based in Norway.

Knut was appointed as the IMPA treasurer at the 1999 IMPA A.G.M. and was previously vice-president (purchasers).
