Martin was born in 1967 and started his shipping carreer in 1987 with Wijsmuller (the Salvage, Towage and Heavy-lift Shipping Company in Ijmuiden, the Netherlands) at the Finance Department. After two years he joined the Purchase Department as junior purchaser.
In 1992 the Heavy-lift part of the Wijsmuller-group was taken over by Heerema Offshore and merged in 1993 with Dock Express Shipping from Rotterdam. Martin became the Purchase Manager of the new company named Dockwise NV situated in Belgium.

In 1998 he joined Seatrade Groningen BV, in the north of The Netherlands as Senior Buyer. In 2000 he was appointed as Purchase Manager, responsible for all contracts, prices and the logistics.

Martin joined the IMPA council in September 2005
